Powerful presentations

Training program

(in person)

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Participants learn to write for speaking, drawing inspiration from the masters of the genre, from Aristotle to Nancy Duarte. Then comes the time for speaking as such and work on posture, non-verbal language, voice and stress management. An intensive, interactive, creative training course, and above all, adapted to the specific needs of the participants and the company.

After completing this training, participants will be able to:

✔︎ Structure an intervention to make it convincing, following a precise methodology and a plan (Sparkline)

✔︎ Learn to write orally using concrete and actionable tools (audience audit, rhetoric, presentation structure)

✔︎ Produce clean visual aids (slides) that support the speech and comply with the graphic charter of the participant's company;

✔︎ Combine speech and visuals in a balanced way, for a coherent and impactful presentation, adapted to the audience

✔︎ Acquire ease and charisma in front of an audience, whether in front of a small gathering or on a larger stage, by using immediately applicable tools and techniques

✔︎︎ Master public speaking and approach their future presentations with confidence, by applying the tools learned in training.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Any employee exposed to public speaking issues,

Any employee belonging to a field of activity which requires the acquisition of key skills for a successful, effective and impactful presentation and communication.

PREREQUISITES

No prerequisites to follow the training. Just the desire to learn and dare to get out of their comfort zone.

DURATION OF TRAINING AND ORGANIZATIONAL METHODS —

In person

1-day format: The total duration of the training is 8 hours with a Present Perfect expert coach.

2-day format: The total duration of the training is 16 hours, including 12 with an expert coach in Present Perfect 4 public speaking with an expert graphic designer specializing in slide design.

Each session welcomes between a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 participants.

The training dates are chosen in collaboration with the client, depending on their availability. The schedules are fixed for group training.

As soon as the dates are set, our clients are invited to book the chosen slots in the participants' calendar and to send us their email address. Upon receipt, we send each person their invitation email.

LOCATION OF TRAINING

In person, the training takes place at the client's premises, who is responsible for the proper organization of the training in advance, with a view to welcoming the participants. He ensures that the equipment necessary for the proper conduct of the training is provided (broadcast screen, HDMI cable, flipchart, etc.).

We invite our customers who are unable to host the training at home to contact us; alternative solutions are possible.

If the training takes place outside Paris, a trainer travel fee is applicable.

TRAINING CONTENT

Before the training, participants receive an invitation email including the 3 elements to prepare/send before the training:

  • An individual questionnaire, which records their knowledge and expectations. This questionnaire is mandatory before being able to attend the training. This preparatory work is crucial for the acquisition and assimilation of the lessons during the training.

  • An oral presentation: Participants are invited to choose the presentation they would like to work on during the training. This can be a presentation they have already given, or one they will have to give in the future.

  • A slide deck of their choice: Participants send to Present Perfect (maximum D-7 before the start of the training) a set of slides of their choice. One slide of each participant will be redesigned by the expert graphic designer

On the day of the training, participants receive an illustrated educational booklet (40 pages) to help them take notes, memorize information and reread it after training.

Module 1
The message

Duration: 4h00 (1 Day format) / 5h15 (2 Day format)

PART 1:
The First Impression

Understanding that first impressions are fundamental to any type of public speaking is crucial. Based on research by body language expert Mark Bowden, we examine the four categories of first impressions. Participants then complete an activity in which they identify the four main adjectives that best describe how they would like to be perceived in a professional setting.

PART 3:
Rhetoric

Give weight and strength to your arguments and learn to organize them. Aristotle teaches us that a speech must address three things to resonate with people.

  • Ethos: building trust by establishing your credibility and authority (writer).

  • Pathos: appealing to emotion by connecting with your audience through their values and interests (Audience).

  • Logos: appeal to your audience's intelligence with well-constructed and clearly argued ideas (Context).

In the words of Aristotle himself (translated from Ancient Greek by George Kennedy in 1991 and last published by Indo-European Publishing in 2011)

PART 4:
Presentation plan

We don't always have much time to prepare a presentation, nor a coach to guide us. Present Perfect has therefore created a concise, ready-to-use 5-step action plan to prepare any presentation. This plan also explains how to select, prioritize, and make the information shared in a presentation impactful:

  1. Conduct the audience audit (slice 3 recap)

  1. Identifying your “tweet”: In a speech or presentation, you can say ONE thing. Everything that supports this point can be arguments presented in different ways, but all serving ONE KEY IDEA. According to Albert Einstein's methodology, “If you can't explain something simply, you don't understand it well enough.”

  1. Perform a "brain drain": Write down all the information on a piece of paper, then check which pieces actually relate to the tweet. Select the information that should be removed from the presentation.

  1. Identify the main arguments: After removing certain points, participants will choose 3 to 5 main arguments to include in their presentation. More than that is not a good idea. They can state ONE point and have a few points that support, elaborate on, or expand upon that statement.

  1. Defining my refrain: What catchy text/phrase can I repeat several times in my speech to help the audience remember who I am and what I talked about? This technique is actually a literary device: the antistrophe. The word "antistrophe" is derived from a Greek word meaning "to go back." It's a rhetorical device that involves repeating the same words at the end of consecutive sentences, clauses, phrases, and paragraphs.

PART 2:
Your audience

Using a set of pre-prepared questions, participants learn to assess their audience for each presentation/public speaking event:

  • Who is in the audience? Who are you speaking to in particular?

  • Who in your audience is it crucial that you convince?

  • How diverse is the audience? How are they mixed?

  • What is the audience's level of expertise on your topic? Are there different levels of expertise and understanding? How will this mix influence what you say?

  • How happy is the audience to see you as a speaker? Will people want to hear what the speaker has to say, or should some resistance be expected?

  • What does the audience expect the speaker to say? On a scale of 1 to 10, how big a fan are they of her/him?

  • How does the speaker want the audience to feel at the end of their speech? What does a successful speech look like?

  • What is the context of this speech? What are the material conditions surrounding the speech: where is it? In a meeting room? In another room? Is there a podium or not? Is there a projector that might blind me? Speakers? Will I be using slides or not?

  • Etc.

PART 5:
The Little Black Dress

Now that they know who they are speaking to, and understand the role of pathos, ethos, and logos in their speech, the candidates must be aware of the form their presentation will take. This is what we call "The Little Black Dress" (something basic that everyone should have access to and that is adaptable to all situations).

This is the format discovered by presentation expert Nancy Duarte, with elements that Present Perfect added to create a "ready-to-use" presentation template.

In this section, candidates will learn a presentation structure that they can reuse to make their future presentations impactful.
The participants then put into practice

PART 6:
Putting into practice

For each part of the message preparation, the coach works with the participants on their specific case. They ensure that the methodology is understood and correctly applied. The other participants then provide their feedback.

Module 2
Slide design

Duration: 40 mins (1-day format) / 4 hrs (2-day format)

  • When you present a topic and there are slides, it is the speaker who carries the message. Not the slides. What is the difference between a slide and a document? How to think, create, organize your slides so that they serve the speech in an impactful way? What are the golden rules of design?

  • PART 1: The Golden Rules of Design and Storyboarding

  • PART 2: Slides makeovers & helpful tools

  • PART 3: Practical application by participants (2-day format)

  • In 2-day format, this module is provided by an expert Present Perfect graphic designer.

III

Module 3
Public speaking

Duration: 2h30 (1 Day format) / 5h45 (2 Day format)

PART 1:
Body Language

It is important to note that there is no such thing as bad body language. There is body language that communicates something you would not want or that is not in line with how you want to be perceived. But there is no wrong way to do it. That is why the most important exercise to help better understand the importance of body language (and how to use it to your advantage) refers to the perception exercise and video at the beginning of the training in Module 1.

The objectives:

  • Become aware of the image given off by your presence, your gestures, your voice with the “school of perception” (since its creation, Present Perfect has coached thousands of managers and we have observed that the way they say they want to be perceived forms 6 major categories.

  • Learn to address your audience with confidence, exuding presence and charisma using a simple tool, “CRISP” (this is an acronym used as a memo-technical device to remember the main non-verbal signals that promote effective and open communication)

  • Learn to vary voice intonation: acquire vocal techniques for all types of presentations using the musical symbol method.

PART 2:
2nd pass, practical application, coaching

Coaching session where all the tools learned will be put into practice, through a second pass of their presentation. The coach's comments will be transmitted and the final oral exam will be administered.
